Motto

‘Understand the Mind and See the Nature (明心見性)’
The motto emphasizes the belief that the minds and natures of sentient beings are originally clear and bright, but they have been covered over by countless obstructions from offenses and idle thoughts.

Vision

The College is to become a renowned Buddhism-based self-financed tertiary education institution in Hong Kong, continues to strive to provide a high-tech high-touch learning environment for education transformation to take place in disciplines that are of demand in the community.

Mission

  • To build a better sustainable future for people by integrating Buddhist Dharma in main stream education.
  • To work towards the establishment of a Buddhism-based university.
  • To engage in applied research work so as to enrich teaching and learning and to cultivate the ability to create, innovate and the four immeasurable minds.
  • To nurture socially responsible, and giving citizens with ethical and moral integrity, compassion, character, creativity, wisdom, commitment, perseverance.
  • To nurture good karma through taking good care of own body, speech and mind which will have positive impacts on self, environment and fellow being.

Philosophy

The College believes that beings can all be enlightened at various extent in the course of whole person development and in their academic disciplines. Curricula are thoroughly designed to include the three non-outflow studies (三無漏學): Precepts (戒), Samadhi (定) and wisdom (慧) which are cultivated and nurtured through learning the panca-vidya note 1 (五明) , put panca-vidya in action and reflect on their lived experience of panca-vidya in the realm of the Buddhist Dharma.

The panca-vidya (五明) includes:
  • Language (聲明) covers expression and deliberations, for examples, public speech, presentation, KOL and debate.
  • Logic (因明) covers inquiry process, for examples, inquiry, logic and creativity.
  • Technology (工巧明) covers the understanding of natural science and acquired skills to help, for examples, science, IoA, caring skills, handicrafts.
  • Health (醫方明) covers the bio-psycho-socio-spiritual health knowledge, for examples, health literacy, life style, infection control practice.
  • Mindfulness (內明) covers practices in cultivating the three non-outflow studies and the four immeasurable minds, for example, pain and suffering, compassion, mind consciousness, metta meditation.

Core values

The core value of the College are the four immeasurable minds, loving-kindness (慈), compassion (悲), joy (喜) and equanimity (捨) which will be deepened by panca-vidya and the three non-outflow studies.

Educational aims

The College’s educational aims for all students are as follows:
  • development of numeracy and of basic scientific, technological and information literacy for today’s world. They are covered by Technology (工巧明).
  • development of knowledge and skill in a specialist study area or areas, generally with a career pathway in mind. They are covered by Technology (工巧明) and Mindfulness (內明).
  • development as a social being in relationship with others–the communicative and interpersonal aspects of development. They are covered by Language (聲明) and Mindfulness (內明).
  • personal development of the individual for life (ethics, moral, intellectual, physical, psychological, emotional and aesthetic development). They are covered by Mindfulness (內明) and Health (醫方明).
  • development as a member of the local, national and international community, with an understanding of social, economic, cultural and political issues. They are covered by Language (聲明) and logic (因明).
  • development as a member of today’s globalised world with global understandings (e.g. how the world got to where it is; how its parts are interconnected; how its resources might best be sustained and shared; how we can best maintain peace across ethnic, cultural and religious divides; how we can bring greater justice, how we might define, agree and promote human rights; and other issues). They are covered by Language (聲明) , Logic (因明), Technology (工巧明) , Mindfulness (內明) and Health (醫方明).
The College integrates the panca-vidya in its curricula. For education transformation to occur, we assume that learning is a spiral of inquiry, learning and actions which are on-going, overlaying and interconnected process. The learning process is designed across students’ years of study in the College. In their junior years, the study of panca-vidya panca-vidya is at conceptual level while at their intermediate years, students have opportunities to put these concepts in action. In their senior years of study, students will have the opportunities to deepen their understanding and practice by reflecting on their lived experience in the realm of the Buddhist Dharma.
